9×12 original pastel on sanded paper
I paint and sometimes look at the outcome and ask myself, “How did I do that?” Painting is clearly a right-brained activity. This painting is an ounce of logic and a pound of intuition. When I painted this, I had been experimenting with abstracts. My abstract work contributes to freedom, especially in painting backgrounds. I try to paint the background as I am painting the figure, blending as I go so it doesn’t look like a cut-out figure on an afterthought background.
