Rock Down

9×12 original pastel on sanded paper

A picture speaks a thousand words.  This painting captures the essence of my oldest son.  He is athletic and strong, but also intuitive.  I painted this recently from an old photograph. Though I most like to paint from live models, that isn’t always very practical.  I have a collection of “must paint someday” reference photos.  It is amazing how much I remember  once I start painting.  I wanted the California rocks to come alive. The encircling waters of the Calaveras River are in the foreground and background.
