On the Fence

9×12 original pastel on sanded paper

Each painting is a challenge for me to be a little more daring with colors, looseness, and creativity. I like lots of thick buttery strokes of pastel and lots of color.  I aim to go well beyond realism, leaving my feeling about the subject.  I just love the way this little boy “hangs” on the fence, scrunched up, with a rounded back.  His red shirt aggressively pulls the viewer’s eye into the painting, contrasted with the green in the background.  His sister looks on.
