Loose paintings look effortless, but the practice of looseness is an arduous and painstaking process. The more I draw, the higher my confidence level, and the looser I can get. When I am working on a commissioned painting in which I have someone to please, my arm gets tight, tensions rise and I get stage fright. Fear is ferocious at times. The only way to cut through fear for me is to get back to drawing my impressions of the world. Then when I get to the easel and introduce color, the task is less daunting. Freedom ebbs and flows. It is a process but I can’t think of anything I’d rather do.
